This has been such an amazing whirlwind week. From a former colleague who said she stayed up until two a.m. reading my memoir, to a dear friend who said it was a page-turner and she couldn’t put it down, to another who said she was going to use it as a study in a book club, and a couple who said it was made for a movie all made this a fitting end of my four-year journey. I was so amazed at the calls and messages I received from people sharing how my memoir has touched their hearts and some to tears. I am filled with emotion at the joy of completing something others are enjoying. As I went along my week, I met others who began to share their stories with me.
I walked into a coffee shop and saw this woman full of life, and the moment we connected, it was clear our paths were somewhat similar, and we began to share our stories of overcoming. I was touched by her story, and we agreed to stay connected with each other. And there were more. At the end of the day, I was just conveying a message of hope wrapped around my lifetime of truths. I hoped by writing my life story and sharing my own experiences it would compel others to want to share theirs.
As others began to share their stories with me, I began to see the difference it makes when we bring people into the fold and how empowering that can be. People who feel alone suddenly feel valued and encouraged instead of judged or cast aside. I began to reflect on the power of sharing our own story of resilience and how it is possible to overcome adversity. It confirmed what I had hoped my book would do – to let others know it is possible to heal and overcome.
Courage sometimes involves going against the wind and braving the storms of life. It involves being yourself and not comparing yourself to other people’s journeys. It’s about being you and finding the people who support and champion you. There will always be naysayers and champions or people who will misperceive your intentions. Choose wisely and let go of what doesn’t serve your purpose anymore. Your time and energy are valuable. As you continue your journey be sure to look on the horizon for new open doors and people you come across who may need to hear your story. Most of all, be kind to you and be happy.
Until next time – read, write, and learn…J
